- About us
The Antiochian House of Studies (AHOS) was established in 1980, under the aegis of the ancient and unbroken tradition of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, with the express purpose of offering a theological education to as broad a public as possible. For over 40 years, through its unique distance-learning framework, AHOS has offered programs of theological study for Orthodox Christians and others to increase their knowledge of the faith and to acquire practical skills in support of their work in the Church. For more about the history of AHOS, please see Our History.
Today, as an internationally renowned program of Orthodox theological study, AHOS offers a graduate theological degree (M.Th.) program, a non-degree graduate certificate program, and a Ph.D program. In addition, the faculty and resources of AHOS contribute significantly to the D.Min. Program with Eastern Christian Focus offered by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
AHOS currently offers the following programs of study:
- St. Stephen’s Certificate in Orthodox Theology (non-degree program)
- M.Th. in Applied Orthodox Theology
- Ph.D. in Orthodox Studies
In the 40 years since the inception of AHOS, its programs of study have offered specialized academic training on a professional level to thousands of students from all over the world, representing all Orthodox Christian jurisdictions as well as students from the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant denominations including Lutheran, Episcopal, Evangelical, Methodist, Southern Baptist, the Church of England, and many more.
It is our intentional sincere mission to bring the Ethos of the historical “School of Antioch,” the Ancient Church as the treasure-house and the most precious gift of the Roum Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch to North America in its missionary heritage with the richest ethnic and linguistic diversity. Our students will learn authentic Spirituality, continuous Apostolic Tradition, Biblical Theology, Patrology, lives of Saints, Martyrs, Confessors, Liturgical Life and Practice, Ascetical/Monastic disciplines, along with its renowned homiletical Tradition and distinctive Hermeneutical Principles, Missionary Activities, and certainly most uniquely magnificent Hymnology. Furthermore, we seek to provide a distinctive educational opportunity to laity and clergy students to experience combined distant and resident learning in an atmosphere of intimate home environment from which our name “House” comes. Our ultimate goal is to make theological endeavor and knowledge as an encounter with the Living Triune God who can be experienced through living the ascetical life while maintaining the highest achievable academic excellence. Being faithful to our Antiochian heritage, we are committed to offering diverse equality of opportunities and human worth and dignity to our inquirers of all nations and for all nations and based on the Divine Principle “Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God.”
The AHOS Master of Theology degree is granted in partnership with the Saint John of Damascus School of Theology of the University of Balamand in Lebanon, and is internationally accredited by the Commission for Higher Learning of the Republic of Lebanon.
On September 1, 2017, the Antiochian House of Studies initiated the process of accreditation with the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS).
